- Benedict Cumberbatch
While filming for the mini-series ‘To The Ends of the Earth’ in South Africa back in 2005, Cumberbatch spent the day learning how to scuba dive. He was joined by his fellow cast members during the session but later that day they were all about to learn a much dark lesson. Driving back to their hotel, their front tire burst, forcing the group to climb out of the car and begin unloading the spare. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a group of 6 armed men appeared, ready to cause a whole world of trouble. The gang forced Cumberbatch and the others back into the car and told them to keep their hands on their heads and their heads down. After searching the actors for money, drugs, and weapons, the gang tied them up and eventually tried to bundle Cumberbatch into the trunk of the car. Luckily, displaying skills that would make Sherlock jealous, Cumberbatch managed to reason with the criminals and stop himself being taken hostage. Eventually, everyone was allowed to go, proving that Cumberbatch is charming to just about everyone.
- Alex Band
Sadly for Alex though, he fell victim to a violent attack in the early hours of the 18th of August 2013 in Michigan. After leaving his hotel room at around 3 am to head to a convenience store, things took a turn for the worse when a mysterious van pulled up beside him and abducted him. The assailants grabbed Band from behind and held a gun to his face while beating him with a police baton. The kidnapper demanded Band’s ‘Hollywood Money’ and continued to attack him, cornering the singer in the van. Scared for his life, Band pleaded with his kidnappers and told them how he’d only learned a few weeks earlier that he was going to be a dad. Thankfully, this seemed to hit home with the thugs, who then decided to kick him out of the van. But Band’s ordeal wasn’t over; he landed on some train tracks, fracturing his lower spine and falling unconsciousness. Along with his spine injury, Band ended up needing 15 stitches to his chin. He also had 3 broken teeth and extensive bruising to his stomach from the baton beating. The men stole Band’s credit cards, ID, phone, and wallet, which contained about $1,200. You’ll be glad to know that and made a full recovery.
- George Clooney
In 2007 Clooney was in the Sudanese region of Darfur making a documentary about the conflict in the country. During production, Clooney and his crew were driving along a road in the middle of nowhere, which isn’t the smartest idea in a war-torn country. And it wasn’t long before their vehicle was held up and forced to stop. Seconds later, Clooney had a Kalashnikov rammed in his face as he was forced to exit the truck. As if that wasn’t horrific enough, the person holding the rifle was a 10-year-old child soldier. Luckily, Clooney got away safely and the incident didn’t prevent him from carrying out his humanitarian work in the region. Quite the opposite in fact, as he went on to form ‘Not On Our Watch’ with Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Don Cheadle two years after the incident, to help highlight human rights abuses in Darfur.
- 2 Chainz
In 2013 rapper 2 Chainz was walking through San Francisco when he was held up by three men armed with Guns. The robbers demanded that he give up his famous namesake jewelry, but 2 Chainz wasn’t giving up so easily. Instead of offering up his bling or calling the police, Chainz decided that a quick 100 m dash was the best way to get out of his sticky situation. The gang gave chase but eventually splintered without getting their hands on the ‘two chains’ – luckily for 2 Chainz – if that makes sense. They were trying to steal two chains from 2 Chainz. However, in a spectacular reversal of fortune, 2 Chainz was actually arrested five days later for felony drug charges.
- Rod Stewart
We’re going back a few decades to 1982 when British rock legend Rod Stewart was still at the height of his success and attracted some unwanted attention from a stupid thief. The ‘Maggie May’ singer was with his secretary and his 3-year-old daughter at the time of the incident. The trio started getting into the rock star’s rather flashy 1977 Porsche Turbo Carrera, which was parked near Sunset Boulevard, when an armed robber approached them and demanded the keys – and Rod’s wallet. There was just one problem. The robber couldn’t actually start the car because it was push button ignition. To add insult to injury, the robber then actually made Rod Stewart start the car for him before speeding off with it.
- Tupac Shakur
We’re not talking about THAT particular gun crime today, but an earlier incident in 1994 where the ‘Hit ‘Em Up’ star was the victim of a violent robbery. The rapper was walking into the 7th Avenue Quad Recording Studios in Manhattan with his manager and a friend when shit got real. As they reached the elevator, they were held up by three gunmen who told them to ‘give up the jewelry and get on the floor’. His friend and the manager complied, but Tupac started swearing at the assailants – a brave but risky strategy – and the gunmen fired on Tupac. The rapper was shot five times – twice in the head, twice in the groin, and once in the hand. His manager, Freddie Moore, was also shot in the abdomen. While the robbers were never caught, one of them came forward in 2011. Convicted murderer Dexter Isaac is currently serving a life sentence, but he has claimed that he was hired by James ‘Jimmy Henchmen’ Rosemond. Dexter was paid $2,500 for the attack and could keep all of the jewelry that was stolen, except for one ring, which was to be given to Rosemond. In the end, the robbers got away with over $40,000 of jewelry. Luckily, both victims lived to tell the tale.
- Madeleine Stowe
Madeleine Stowe, an actress who’s appeared in 12 Monkeys and recently bossed TV screens in teen drama ‘Revenge’, had a run in with criminals in 2015. While sleeping naked in her Beverly Hills home with her husband, Brian Benben, she was woken up in the middle of the night by a noise coming from the bathroom. In a half-dazed state, the actress got up to investigate and was confronted by a man who held a gun to her neck. He demanded her valuables and Stowe quickly gave him a bag full of antique jewelry worth a whopping $75,000. The robber escaped, leaving Stowe unscathed but terrified. Luckily, police arrested suspect Walter Canizalez a few months later while he was midway through another crime. He has been charged with more than 15 crimes including robbery and sexual battery in a hilarious twist, he was arrested in a Spiderman mask.
Award-winning rapper Rhymefest, who fell foul of gun crime in August 2016. The rapper, who won both a Grammy and an Oscar in 2015 for his work on the film Selma, was held up in his car in the South Side of Chicago. At 7.30 am, an attacker jumped into Rhymefest’s parked vehicle and pointed a gun at his face, saying that he would shoot the musician in the head if he didn’t give up his wallet. Smith handed it over, but it only contained $3 and the assailant left. But that wasn’t the end of Rhymefest’s issues; when trying to tell the police what had happened to him, they refused to report the crime and told him to get out of the police station. Rhymefest was so annoyed by the way he was treated he posted a video online, which quickly garnered a hell of a lot of attention. Chicago Police have since apologized to the musician but have been unable to find the robber.
- Kim Kardashian
Kim was in Paris with her sisters, Kourtney and Kendall. In the early hours, a group of armed men disguised as police officers broke into the Kardashian private apartment and held the reality star at gunpoint. They gagged Kim with duct tape and bound her hands with cable ties before putting her in the bath tub and locking her in the bathroom – although she managed to wriggle her hands free of the cable ties. The socialite had been followed throughout the day by people resembling the gang who managed to steal a reported $9m worth of jewelry along with several of Kim’s smart phones. While Kim escaped without injury, reports claim that she was severely traumatized by the robbery.
- Fran Drescher
Fran Drescher, co-creator, producer, writer, director and star of the Emmy-award winning 90s series, ‘The Nanny’, was the victim of one the worst crimes imaginable. In 1985, Drescher was at home with her husband and a friend when two robbers broke down the front door and took the three hostage at gunpoint. One robber then ransacked the house while the other tied up her husband and forced him to watch while the armed robber raped both Drescher and her friend. The attackers stole Drescher’s car and during a three night police stake-out, the attackers were caught and arrested. Drescher’s rapist had been on parole during the attack but was on a rampage of sexual assault of which Drescher was just one victim. He received two life sentences totaling around 150 years and will never be released from prison. Drescher still speaks about her experiences and claims that her upbeat attitude has helped to overcome the pain caused.
